Data Mining and Predictive Analytics at the Grocery Store (via timhoran)
I always find it interesting to see what coupons are auto-magically generated whenever I buy something at the grocery store.
The biggest question on my mind is how big will the first mover advantage be in the iPhone app ecosystem? … If first mover means as much on the iPhone as it did on Facebook, then the early stars like Loopt/Yelp, Super Monkey, Twitterific, and others will have an advantage.

- Fred Wilson in his A VC blog post What can we learn about the iPhone app ecosystem from the Facebook app ecosystem?
I’ve been wondering the same thing, specifically from a local/gps-related perspective, and believe that the first-movers in the iPhone app ecosystem will develop similar market advantages.
This piece of bacon showed up in my Facebook Newsfeed today.
I was very tempted to become a ‘Fan’ of ‘bacon’ myself but successfully resisted.
The App Store has launched. I’m sure there’s a strategy to Apple’s madness with the App Store and when certain applications will be made available but I couldn’t find the Pegasus app referred to in my previous post.
I did find some Modality apps though. Modality is a local company based in Durham, NC that has developed a number of iPhone applications, including this Frommer’s Guide to New York. Congrats to them, I’m sure it’s an exciting time for their entire team.
Pegasus News’ iPhone 3G App is Time-and-Location Centric
The big battle for the local eye-balls and ad dollars will very closely parallel the timelines for when easy to use, GPS-enabled mobile devices like the new iPhone become mainstream. The mobile/media industry has been waiting for over a decade to reach this point and now thanks to Apple I think we’re finally now in the home stretch.
Lower priced GPS-enabled, easy to use devices + the almost now standard all you can eat data plans = always on, heavy usage data consumption.
I’m convinced that the investment Pegasus and other aggressive locally focused media companies and application developers make now (see story) with their iPhone apps to learn and own this space will pay big dividends over the long haul.
It will be really exciting to see the different applications available when the iPhone App Store goes live in the next few days. Game On!
BeauSoleil - NewzReel
BeauSoleil is playing at the NC Museum of Art’s Concert Series in the Park on Saturday, July 12. I was lucky enough to see them play at the New Orleans Jazz fest a number of years ago…definitely worth checking out.
